Perhaps Lynch and Frost have wiped the dust off since then and would be able to write faster, but Twin Peaks is a careful and deliberate show. It took Lynch and Mark Frost four and half years to write and film the 18 episode third season, so any new seasons would likely take a long time to produce.
DAVID LYNCH TWIN PEAKS SEASON 4 SERIES
During an event at Belgrade Culture Centre in Serbia, Lynch told a crowd of people that it was too early to tell and that the time it takes to develop the series is a big factor. Mark Frost's comments line up with what David Lynch said about making Season 4 back in September. Showtime at least seems open to the idea of more episodes, but ultimately at the end of the day, the final decision really lies with Frost and co-creator David Lynch. In an interview with IndieWire, Mark Frost said that he hasn't "decided yet" on if he wants to make another season of his cult classic series Twin Peaks. It seems like no one is really quite sure yet if they want to continue Twin Peaks.
I think it's still an open question and it's one that we're looking at and one that I think Showtime is musing as well.

It’s an excellent time to be a TV fan as there are plenty of returning favorites and new shows to choose from throughout the entire month, as well as some bittersweet endings, such as “Ozark,” which will premiere its final episodes at the end of April.I haven't decided yet. Ever since that jaw-dropping, questions-lingering finale aired, fans have waited sweatingly for news on a follow-up season. No matter the streaming service or network the show is premiering on, the newest series brings a level of talent or star power that is impossible to ignore, with new shows led by everyone from Viola Davis to Gary Oldman, Nicole Kidman to Elizabeth Moss. David Lynch’s Wisteria aka Twin Peaks : Season 4 abandoned Twin Peaks : The Return or Twin Peaks : Season 3 as some fans bill it was four years ago now.
While based on the prestige that follows it, we’re able to tell the absolute must-watches such as the return of fan and critic favorite series “Russian Doll,” “Barry,” and “Better Call Saul,” there are plenty more that are premiering in April that will also require time and energy. We continue to repeat ourselves, but it’s because it’s true -there’s a terrific amount of television coming out on a month-to-month basis currently, and so much of it looks so good it arguably borders on eating cinema’s lunch. But despite numerous attempts over the period of decades to get it produced, it remains the greatest "what if?" of Lynch’s career. Thanks to interviews with Lynch and various cast members who were attached to the project throughout its development, in addition to multiple versions of its script floating around the internet, the film has become the stuff of legend amongst cinephiles. Many of these projects are still surrounded in mystery, with only a few snippets of information available that often raise more questions than they answer, but none are as well documented as Ronnie Rocket.
Given Lynch’s perchance for films of a slightly more unusual nature than the typical studio affair, perhaps that should come as no surprise. The reasons for their cancellations are numerous, with lack of funding being a recurring theme among them. From a Marilyn Monroe biopic to a comedy about three men who used to be cows living in northern Los Angeles, the surrealist director has enough unmade films to fill an entire filmography by themselves. David Lynch is no stranger to unrealized projects.
